Abstract

Vitamin D-dependent rickets type 2 (VDDR-II) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by end-organ resistance to active vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D?), leading to impaired calcium and phosphate metabolism. This condition not only affects skeletal development but also has significant dental implications, often overlooked in clinical practice.

This case report presents a 17-year-old female diagnosed with VDDR-II who exhibited characteristic dental manifestations, including delayed eruption, enamel hypoplasia, and widened pulp chambers. A comprehensive dental examination revealed multiple carious lesions and periapical pathologies with supernumerary teeth. Radiographic findings supported clinical features consistent with rickets-related dental anomalies.

The patient underwent a multidisciplinary treatment approach involving pediatric dentistry and endodontics. Preventive strategies, restorative interventions, and endodontic treatments were planned with consideration of her systemic condition. Oral hygiene reinforcement and regular follow-ups were emphasized. The coordinated dental and medical management led to improved oral health outcomes and quality of life.

Dental professionals play a crucial role in the early diagnosis and comprehensive management of systemic conditions like Vitamin D-Dependent Rickets Type II (VDDR-II). Increased awareness of the diverse oral and dental manifestations associated with this rare disorder can significantly aid in timely diagnosis, minimize complications, and improve long-term outcomes. This underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and medical teams to ensure holistic patient care and early therapeutic intervention.
